Thaipusam procession in Singapore

A devotee with sharp spikes in the insoles of his sandals marches in the annual Thaipusam procession in Singapore.

Thaipusam is celebrated by Tamil communities across the world, and during the festival many devotees pierce their skin to show their devotion to Lord Murugan, son of Hindu god Shiva.

In Singapore, devotees walk a 4km route between important Hindu temples, carrying their burdens.

Wearing shoes like this, every step is a struggle.
