The Danza de los Voladores (Dance of the Flyers), or Palo Volador (flying pole), is an ancient ritual that’s still performed today across Mexico.
In the dangerous ceremony, five dancers climb a 30-metre pole and wrap ropes around their ankles.
Four of the dancers throw themselves off the top of the pole and circle slowly to the ground, as the rope around their ankle unwinds.
The fifth dancer remains on top of the pole, dancing and playing a flute and drum.
According to Mexican folklore, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought.
