Summit of Kelimutu, Flores, Indonesia

At the summit of Kelimutu – a volcano in central Flores, Indonesia – visitors flock at dawn to see the sun rise over three different-coloured crater lakes.

But visitors can’t be certain what colours the lakes will be when they arrive. The lakes change hue almost every day.

When I visited, this lake – Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) – was bluish green. It’s separated by a rock wall from Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake), which normally appears red.

The third lake, Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People), is the furthest west, and during my early morning visit appeared to be an evil shade of black.
