A village chief from the Dani tribe, Baliem Valley in West Papua

A village chief from the Dani tribe, dressed in traditional ceremonial gear, checks his mobile phone during a festival in Papua, Indonesia.

In the Baliem Valley, the Dani are fiercely protective of their customs and traditions, and villages regularly stage ‘pig festivals’ where swine are slaughtered and cooked in underground pits filled with hot rocks.

Although most Dani people in the Baliem Valley now wear modern clothes, locals always slip into traditional gear during village festivals.

But the modern world is never far away, and this village leader clearly needed to keep an eye on his messages during the festivities.
