I encountered this cantankerous llama on a remote farmstead near the city of Puno, Peru.
With its prominent teeth, matted wool and a bad attitude, this grumpy camelid has stuck in my mind ever since I spotted – and smelled – it during an epic trip across Peru and Bolivia.
Llamas have been widely used as a meat and pack animal by Andean cultures since the Pre-Columbian era, and you can’t travel far in Peru or Boliva before spotting one.
But be careful. These moody domesticated animals won’t think twice about spitting at you if they think you’re part of their herd!
