A demon twists and twirls on one of the highest stages in the world.
During the annual Druk Wangyel Tshechu festival near Thimphu, Bhutan, members of the Royal Bhutan Army perform traditional masked dances.
The festival takes place at the top of the world – on a chilly mountaintop, with the Himalayas on all sides. It’s a magical experience.
Each of the dances tells a complex story, and dozens of beautifully carved and painted masks are used to bring ancient monsters and deities to life.
