Mexico, Mexico City, Zócalo

A Pez Diablo (devil fish), more commonly known as a Jenny Haniver, on display in a heath food store near the Zócalo in Mexico City.

A Jenny Haniver is the carcass of a ray or a skate that’s been dried and shaped by hand.

The result is a horrifying, mummified specimen said to be the body of a dead demon or dragon.

In the Mexican state of Veracruz, Jenny Hanivers are said to have magical powers, and are used in rituals by traditional healers.
