Norway, Tromsø

A crazy-eyed sled dog is raring to go during a dusk expedition outside Tromsø, Norway.

I came to Tromsø see the northern lights, but also managed to squeeze in a spot of dog sledding and whale watching.

The dog sledding was tremendous fun, but what I’ll remember most is the infectious, unbridled enthusiasm of the sled dogs.

Before the trip began, I was worried that it might be cruel to use packs of dogs to pull a heavy sled across a frozen wasteland.

But when I saw how excited the dogs were before the journey began – and how they seemed to be happier than any of the frozen human travellers – I soon settled back and enjoyed the ride.
