South Korea, Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)

A Republic of Korea soldier of the United Nations Command Security Battalion guards an empty platform at Dorasan Station, North Korea.

The line from this platform connects North and South Korea.

But while the line runs into the secretive socialist state, trains rarely travel north from Dorasan.

Tourists can take a train from Seoul to Dorasan to visit the Korean Demilitarized Zone, and arriving at the station is a disconcerting experience as it’s eerily quiet and impossibly clean.

Guards from South Korea watch the platform at all times.

But as there are few visitors aside from camera-clicking tourists, they don’t have much to do except stand perfectly still and look mean in their reflective sunglasses.
