Bhutan, Thimphu, Druk Wangyel Tshechu festival

A demon twists and twirls at the top of the world.

During the annual Druk Wangyel Tshechu festival near Thimphu, Bhutan, members of the Royal Bhutan Army perform traditional masked dances.

As the festival takes place on one of the world’s highest stages – on a mountain, with the Himalayas visible all around – it’s an unforgettable experience.

Each of the dances tells a complex story, and dozens of beautifully carved and painted masks are used to bring ancient monsters and deities to life.
