Thailand, Bangkok, Wat Mahabut

A proud grandfather shows his family’s latest addition to the statue of a ghost bride at Wat Mahabut temple in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Thai legend, a young man named Mak was sent to war in the mid 1800s while his wife, Mae Nak Phra Khanong, was pregnant.

Mae Nak Phra Khanong and her child died while Mak was fighting for his country. But when he returned home, his wife and child were waiting for him.

Mak eventually realised he’d been living with ghosts, and fled to Wat Mahabut to escape.

Angry, Mae Nak Phra Khanong terrorised the local area until her ghost was captured in a jar by an exorcist.

Today, this shrine in Wat Mahabut honours the tragic ghost bride, and people come from across Thailand, especially on public holidays, to offer prayers and leave gifts.

The ghost bride story is so famous that it’s been adapted for Thai TV dramas, movies and even a musical.
