Peru, Lima, Basílica y Convento de San Francisco

The Basílica y Convento de San Francisco (Saint Francis Monastery) in Lima, Peru, is an incredible building.

It’s no surprise that it made the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.

But for fans of the macabre, the real action is in the catacombs…
.
The crypts below the monastery house the remains of over 25,000 bodies, and was Lima’s main burial site until the city cemetery opened in 1808.

The catacombs were rediscovered in 1943, including this well of skulls.

Visitors are forbidden from taking photos, forcing dark tourists like me to risk a sneaky a snap of this striking ossuary.
