Singapore, Bukit Brown cemetery

A forgotten statue, covered in lichen, peers from the undergrowth in Singapore’s beleaguered cemetery, Bukit Brown.

I lived in Singapore from 2014 to 2015, and spent many happy hours in Bukit Brown – searching for abandoned tombs, taking photos of monitor lizards… and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.

I also joined weekend tours run by the All Things Bukit Brown group, who have discovered lost graves and reunited families with their forgotten heritage.

Sadly, large portions of Bukit Brown have been bulldozed to make way for new motorways.

Singapore is a wonderful, warm and interesting city – but the government rarely lets nostalgia stand in the way of progress.
