Bhutan, Thimphu, Tachogang Lhakhang bridge

This beautiful, 900-year-old iron bridge was the first historical site I visited in Bhutan.

It set the scene for one of my most exciting and rewarding adventures.

The Tachogang Lhakhang bridge was built in the mid 14th century by Thangthong Gyalpo, a pioneering civil engineer – and Buddhist yogi – who built 58 iron chain suspension bridges around Tibet and Bhutan.

Next to the bridge is the Tachogang Lhakhang temple, and visitors can go inside to say prayers and make offerings.

The ancient bridge is closed to pedestrians, but you can cross the river using another – equally wobbly! – suspension bridge to reach the temple and spin its prayer wheels.

This bridge is the first stop most tourists make after arriving in Bhutan, and is found on the road to Thimphu.
