Bolivia, Laguna Colorada

The crimson waters of Bolivia’s Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon), a shallow salt lake in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve.

The water appears red because of sediment and the pigmentation of some algae.

The algae provides a cardinal feast for hundreds of flamingos, which can be seen snuffling in the lake all year round.

I visited the lake as part of an epic tour that set off from the city of Uyuni, crossed high through the mountains, and ended up back at the Salar de Uyuni salt flats.

Bolivia boasts some of the most dramatic landscapes and natural wonders in South America, and I hope my travels take me back there one day.
