Bolivia, Tarabuco, Pujllay Festival

Traditional, lethal-looking shoes with spurs worn during the Pujllay Festival in Tarabuco, Bolivia.

The key event during Pujllay is a procession featuring over 60 Bolivian communities.

Each group wears elaborate traditional costumes and performs dances unique to their region.

These spurred shoes are a highlight of Pujllay, and are said to have been appropriated from Spanish invaders who were defeated by indigenous people in battle.

Fortunately, the conga isn’t one of Pujllay’s dances. I’d hate to be dancing behind someone wearing this extreme footwear!
