The equestrian statue of Bishop Absalon in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the spire of St Nicholas Church in the background.
Bishop Absalon is said to have founded the city of Copenhagen, and this statue was erected in 1902.
The statue depicts Absalon as a military commander – mounted on a rearing horse, wearing chainmail and a helmet, holding an axe in his right hand.
The statue faces Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen, where Absalon’s castle once stood. But the statue’s head turns to the right, looking towards Copenhagen City Hall.
