Ecuador, Galápagos islands

A land iguana feasts on a prickly pear cactus in the Galápagos.

Although the marine iguanas of the Galápagos get all the attention, you’ll also see colourful land iguanas across the archipelago.

Charles Darwin described Galápagos land iguanas as “ugly animals, of a yellowish orange beneath, and of a brownish-red colour above: from their low facial angle they have a singularly stupid appearance”.

But I don’t agree with the legendary naturalist.

I think Galápagos land iguanas are cute.

Yellowish land iguanas are widespread in the Galápagos, but researchers have also discovered pink land iguanas and a variety unique to Santa Fe island.
