Guatemala, Antigua, Fountain of the Mermaids

A stone mermaid squirts jets of water from her breasts in Guatemala’s most unusual fountain.

The Fountain of the Mermaids in Central Park, Antigua, was built by Guatemalan architect Diego de Porres in 1739. It was inspired by the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, Italy.

Diego de Porres’ was master architect of Antigua from 1703 to 1741, and mermaids were a trademark of his designs.

The architect hid mermaids around the city – including on the dome of Escuela de Cristo Church, Santa Isabel Church and the fountain at La Merced.

If you’re in Antigua, you gotta snap ’em all!
