This fiery vent at the summit of the Pacaya volcano, Guatemala, is like a window into hell.
I climbed Pacaya when staying in nearby Antigua, where I’d come to see the incredible Easter parades.
Climbing Pacaya was exciting and dangerous. I couldn’t believe how close I got to this exposed vent, and wasn’t surprised when the plastic soles of my shoes started to melt!
It was a thrill to stare into the bubbling magma. It was like looking directly into the sun, but without hurting my eyes.
Not surprisingly, treks are now discouraged on Pacaya, especially after deadly eruptions in 2010 and 2013.
