Guatemala, Chichicastenango

The most exciting thing about travelling in South America is that you’ll often stumble on festivals and parades as you move from village to village.

And in Guatemala’s famous market town, Chichicastenango, I came across this amazing ceremony.

The procession originated in Santo Tomás, a Christian church that was built on the ruins of a Mayan temple, and regularly hosts rituals performed by Maya priests.

When I arrived in Chichicastenango I saw dozens of huge effigies being carried from the church, accompanied by a blitzkrieg of fireworks that whistled down the street.

I have no idea what this parade was for – but I’ll never forget it.
