Kawah Ijen volcano crater in Java, Indonesia

The sides of the Kawah Ijen volcano crater in Java, Indonesia, glow blue as jets of sulphur gas burn in the darkness.

The Kawah Ijen volcano is most famous for its mines, where workers use straw baskets to carry blocks of sulphur from the mountain summit to the valley below.

But the volcano is most striking in the early hours of the morning when sulphur gases blast from the rock at high pressure, and burn blue when exposed to oxygen.

Kawah Ijen is an amazing place, and the roar of the sulphur jets – which sound like the world’s biggest Bunsen burner – is unforgettable.
