Indonesia, Tana Toraja

Two roosters battle in a remote village in the mountains of southern Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Although cockfighting is banned by the Indonesian government, the illicit sport is hugely popular in the Tana Toraja region.

Cockfights are used as an opportunity for communities to come together, chill, and have a drink as the feathers fly.

In Bali, cockfights have religious significance, and are used in special rituals to expel evil spirits.

But in Toraja locals need to be careful that they don’t attract the attention of the police – even though most cops turn a blind eye to this ancient tradition.
