Japan, Tokyo, Kawaii Monster Cafe

A singer from Japanese electronic pop duo FEMM performs on top of a gigantic plastic cake in the Kawaii Monster Cafe in Harajuku, Japan.

The Monster Cafe’s surreal and sugar-sweet interior was created by Sebastian Masuda, a designer best known for his work with pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Visiting the Kawaii Monster Cafe – supposedly set in the stomach of a candy-loving beast – is like stepping into a hyper-cute children’s Saturday morning TV show, but with a twist of creepiness that stops it straying into whimsy.

You can book a table at the Kawaii Monster Cafe any time you like, but when I was there I was fortunate to catch an evening of cutting-edge J-pop, where FEMM were one of the main attractions.

With their robotic moves, sophisticated synth sound and cute costumes, the Monster Cafe cake was the perfect stage for FEMM!
