Japan, Tokyo, Zōshigaya Cemetery

Headstones honouring the dead sit amongst modern tower blocks in Tokyo’s serene Zōshigaya Cemetery, Minami-Ikebukuro.

Zōshigaya Cemetery was founded in 1874 as a public graveyard, following government policy of the Meiji period that prohibited burial in central Tokyo.

The graveyard is the final resting place of many notable Japanese writers, scientists and philosophers, and is beautifully maintained and exciting to explore.

I was lucky to visit Zōshigaya during a freak cold snap, and had to battle my way through knee-deep snow to reach some of the most famous graves.
