Camp Leakey in Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia.

A wild orangutan and her baby greet visitors to Camp Leakey in Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia.

Getting to Camp Leakey – a research station owned by the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) – involves a long boat journey along twisting jungle rivers, and visitors can stop along the way to see orangutans, gibbons and proboscis monkeys chowing down at special feeding stations.

The orangutans around Camp Leakey live free in the jungle, but visit feeding stations to get fruit and vegetables from OFI rangers.

Watching the orangutans at play is an unforgettable experience. I’ll never forget watching this female primate teaching her baby how to climb trees.
