Mexico, Xochimilco, Island of the Dolls

In the ancient canals south of Mexico City, you’ll find a macabre shrine that’s become a favourite haunt for adventurous travellers.

The Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls) is home to hundreds of rotting, mouldy and crushed toys, which were fished from the waterways to appease the angry spirit of a girl who drowned nearby.

Most of the dolls are nailed to trees or strung from washing lines, and there are also wooden huts stuffed with nightmarish terror tots.

The island is like a living scene from a horror movie, and feels like stepping into a real-life Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
