Mexico, Mexico City, Plaza Juárez

Over 1,000 red pyramids in Plaza Juárez, in front of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs building in Mexico City.

The 1,034 pyramids were created by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, in a collaboration with the Spanish artist, Vicente Rojo.

The pyramids are made from tenzotle, a red volcanic rock that was used by the Aztecs – and later by the Spanish – to decorate the front of buildings.

Legorreta and Rojo used tenzotle as it was commonly used by builders in this area of the city, and is the dominant colour you’ll see as you explore nearby streets.
