Nicaragua, Managua, La Chureca

Cows and horses pick through waste, looking for food, at Managua’s municipal garbage dump, known as La Chureca, in Nicaragua.

Wild and domesticated animals live in the fetid landfill site, and spend their days scavaging for food.

The poorest Nicaraguans also sell the plastic and metals they find in La Chureca. But the money they earn from recycling is barely enough to live on.

‬Urban waste is a massive problem for societies around the world.

‬If cities continue to generate as much rubbish was as they do currently, World Bank researchers estimate that humanity will exceed 11 million tonnes of trash per day by 2100.
