The Celebes crested macaque is in danger.
Its numbers are dwindling in the wild – partly as its forest habitat is being destroyed, and also because it’s widely hunted as a pest and for bushmeat.
I spent a glorious morning with a family of Celebes crested macaques in the Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The reserve is home to many amazing animals, including vipers, bear cuscuses and tarsiers.
I had lots of fun with the macaques, but eventually left when one of the beasts attacked me for taking pictures of his female partner (true story).
Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s most exciting islands. If you ever plan to go there, please drop me a line as I can recommend excellent and trustworthy local guides who’ll help you make the best of your visit.
