Indonesia, Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve, Sulawesi

A pit viper stays perfectly still as I take photos in the Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The park is home to many incredible animals, most notably endangered Celebes crested macaques, tarsiers and Sualwesi bear cuscuses.

This viper – which was pointed out to me by my excellent forest guide – didn’t move a muscle as I took photos.

In fact, the snake had been stationary for so long that it was covered in spider webs.

This was a relief, of course. I don’t think this viper’s bite is deadly, but it’s said to feel like being branded with a hot iron.
