A wild Celebes crested macaque watches me take photos in Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
With the help of an excellent local guide I spent a morning with a family of Crested macaques, and followed them just after sunrise as they foraged for breakfast.
The Celebes crested macaque is endangered, and numbers are dwindling as the species’ natural habitat is bulldozed to make way for housing and an ever-expanding military base.
In Sulawesi there’s also a tradition of eating Crested macaques, and many of these flat-faced primates are killed each year for bush meat.
