Inca Uyo in Chucuito, south of Puno, is a Peruvian temple with an impressive collection of stone penises.
But while local guides will tell you that women once flocked to the temple to participate in fertility rituals – such as sitting on the stones and being doused in corn beer – don’t believe them.
The temple is a fake.
The temple walls are centuries old, but the phalluses are thought to have been added around 50 or 60 years ago.
Historians speculate that many of the phalluses were used in fertility rituals elsewhere in Peru, but were later collected in Inca Uyo as a way to attract curious tourists.
But, despite its disappointing backstory, Inca Uyo is a fun place to visit, and it’s worth making the short trip from Puno for an obscene photo opportunity.
