Looking down on the cobbled backstreets of Porto, Portugal, from the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.
The Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal arch crossing that spans the River Douro, linking the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
In 1879, Gustave Eiffel presented plans to build a single deck bridge over the Douro.
His project was rejected as it did not account for the growing city population, and a competition was launched to design a double-deck bridge that could take heavy pedestrian traffic.
The work was won by a company from Brussels, Belgian Société de Willebreok, and the bridge was finished in October 1886.
The bridge is Porto’s most famous sight, and crossing it gives you a fresh perspective on the city’s charming streets.
