Singapore, Dempsey Hill

Singapore offers visitors many delights, but the most unexpected is a thriving underground urban exploration scene.

All around the island are incredible abandoned buildings – from forts used during World War II to entire housing estates that are now used for army training.

Near the posh restaurants at Dempsey Hill – hidden behind a strip of jungle crawling with monitor lizards – I was fortunate to find a sprawling mansion that had been abandoned since the 1950s.

The mansion was in a bad state of repair, with collapsed staircases, buzzing wasp nests, and baths filled with years of unspeakable gunk.

Most fascinating was the graffiti sprayed by local kids, most of which looked like insane scrawls from HP Lovecraft’s Necronomicon.

Who knows what strange rituals took place on this chair…
