Singapore, Thaipusam

A Hindu devotee with a spike through his cheeks, and piercings across his arms and chest, takes part in the annual Thaipusam procession in Singapore.

Thaipusam is celebrated by Tamil communities across the world, and during the festival many devotees pierce their skin to show their devotion to Lord Murugan, son of Hindu god Shiva.

In Singapore, devotees walk a 4km route between important Hindu temples while shouldering their burdens.

For some, this means walking in sandals with spikes driven through the soles, which act like foot-sized beds of nails.
