Lines of identical graves in Yin Foh Kuan Cemetery, Singapore.
The cemetery is found in a patch of land between Buona Vista and Commonwealth MRT stations.
Yin Foh Kuan is devoted to the Hakka – Han Chinese people whose ancestral homes are in the Hakka-speaking areas of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Hainan and Guizhou.
The identical graves are arranged in neat rows, and are a far cry from the colourful, opulent designs commonly found on Chinese tombstones.
The graveyard is surrounded by residential Housing & Development Board (HDB) tower blocks, which blend with Yin Foh Kuan’s symmetrical tributes to the dead.
