Singapore, Yin Foh Kuan Cemetery

Lines of identical graves in Yin Foh Kuan Cemetery, Singapore.

The cemetery is found in a patch of land between Buona Vista and Commonwealth MRT stations.

Yin Foh Kuan is devoted to the Hakka – Han Chinese people whose ancestral homes are in the Hakka-speaking areas of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Hainan and Guizhou.

The identical graves are arranged in neat rows, and are a far cry from the colourful, opulent designs commonly found on Chinese tombstones.

The graveyard is surrounded by residential HDB tower blocks, which blend with Yin Foh Kuan’s symmetrical tributes to the dead.
