A Republic of Korea soldier of the United Nations Command Security Battalion stands guard inside a Joint Security Area (JSA) conference room.
Behind him is a door that leads to North Korea.
The JSA is in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea, and is one of the strangest – and most unnerving – places I’ve ever visited.
The South Korean soldiers guarding the border remain perfectly still while visitors file past and take photos, and stand in a modified taekwondo stance with stoic facial expressions, clenched fists and sunglasses.
This intimidating pose is said to freak out North Korean guards.
