South Korea, Seoul, Deoksugung

A beautifully painted and sculpted roof in Deoksugung, a walled compound of palaces in Seoul, South Korea.

The compound was home to Korea’s royal family during the Joseon monarchy, up until the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910.

It’s one of five grand palaces built by the Joseon dynasty, and the buildings are of wildly varying styles.

What I enjoyed most were the roofs of some ancient buildings, where artists used ornate paintwork and luscious colours to create heavenly designs.
