Spain, Barcelona, La Pedrera

The afternoon sun peeks behind a mosaic-encrusted column on the roof of La Pedrera in Barcelona, Spain.

La Pedrera or ‘stone quarry’ is the popular name for Casa Milà, a modernist building that was the last private residence designed by Antoni Gaudí. It was built between 1906 and 1912.

Casa Milà consists of two buildings, which are structured around two courtyards that provide light to the nine storeys below.

One of the building’s most notable features is its roof, which is crowned with skylights, staircase exits, fans and chimneys.

But while all these elements have an architectural function, they’re misshapen and covered in layers of broken marble or glass, making them look deliciously absurd.
