Thailand, Chiang Mai, Wat Mae Kaet

A demon’s lightbulb eyes burn in Thailand’s most brutal hell garden.

Hell gardens are a Buddhist vision of the punishments inflicted on sinners in the afterlife.

There are several hell gardens across Thailand, each of which feature dozens of gory, human-sized statues that show what happens to criminals and miscreants when they die.

All Thailand’s hell gardens are gruesome – but the Wat Mae Kaet park outside Chiang Mai is the most shocking.

The displays are bloodier than other hell gardens, the punishments are more disturbing… and if you pop coins in a slot, some of the animatronic displays spring to life, complete with flickering lightbulb eyes and blood-curdling screams.
