A vintage car on the streets of Montevideo in Uruguay.
From the 1930s to 1950s, Uruguay experienced a major economic upturn when it exported beef and wheat to sustain Europe throughout both World Wars.
During these boom years, rich Uruguayans imported hundreds of European cars, including expensive models by Rolls Royces and Bugatti.
Sadly, the Uruguayan economy crashed in the 1960s, and car imports stopped almost entirely.
But locals still love their vintage motors, and have worked hard to keep them running for decades.
In Uruguay there is even a word for these vintage rides – ‘cachilas’. Although many of the classic cars in Montevideo are neglected wrecks, others run perfectly despite their rust and advanced age.
