Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, Thích Quảng Đức memorial

A memorial to Thích Quảng Đức, the Buddhist monk who burned himself to death in an act of protest in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Thích Quảng Đức set himself on fire on 11 June 1963, when protesting against discriminatory government policies that favoured Catholics and neglected Buddhists.

Thích Quảng Đức sat calmly in the lotus position while a colleague poured gasoline over his head, then placed a lit match against his fuel-soaked robe.

This memorial was unveiled in 2010, and is installed on the corner where Thích Quảng Đức died a half century before (now Nguyễn Đình Chiểu and Cach Mạng Thang Tam streets).
