Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City

Hundreds of impatient moped riders rev and honk as they wait for roads to reopen after a New Year celebration in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

After an incredible Christmas visiting the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia, I ended up in Vietnam for New Year.

It seemed as if the entire population of Ho Chi Minh City had flocked to the centre of town to see fireworks, which were launched from the platform of the Bitexco Financial Tower.

It also felt as if every reveller had brought their moped to the party.

My wife and I had to cross a major road after the fireworks ended – which was terrifying as we had to pick our way through a wall of mopeds, all of which were angrily revving as the riders waited to start their journey.

Luckily, we eventually made it to our hotel, and I took these photos from our bedroom window.

I wonder how long it took these riders to get home…
