In 2015 I travelled deep into the jungles of Papua to meet the elusive Korowai tribe. Before the expedition began, I had an amazing adventure exploring Papua’s Baliem Valley.
Across the Baliem Valley, members of the Dani tribe have preserved the bodies of village elders and notable warriors. These mummies are used in religious ceremonies, and are largely hidden from tourists and visitors.
But some villages are happy for travellers to see their ancient mummies, and I was lucky to encounter this tribal leader in the tiny village of Kurulu.
