A traditional Dani tribal hut in the Baliem Valley, West Papua, Indonesia.
I spent a week hiking in Papua’s luscious Baliem Valley.
The valley was discovered in 1938, at which time the people who live there – the Dani – were still dependent on tools made from stone, bone and wood.
But while Dani life has changed irrevocably, the tribe is fiercely protective of its traditions.
Many Dani families still live in small huts like this one, some of which are perched on the side of a mountain and have a dramatic valley view.
