West Papua, Korowai tribe

A meal of freshly picked witchetty grubs, roasted on an open fire.

In the Indonesian wilderness, even lunch is an adventure.

In 2015 I joined an expedition into the heart of the Papuan jungle, to meet the elusive Korowai tribe.

On our second day in the jungle the Korowai treated us to a meal of freshly picked witchetty grubs, roasted on an open fire.

As I’d never have the opportunity again – and feeling full of bravado after making it to the camp after an arduous jungle trek – I also ate a live grub, like the idiots on TV show ‘I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here!’
